Captains operating a vessel with Voith Schneider propellers control maneuverability using a steering wheel, driving pitch levers, and engine RPM throttles. Pitch levers alter blade angle magnitude to control thrust force, while the steering wheel rotates vector direction, allowing the vessel to hold position or move in any direction instantly.

Modern harbor tugs are powered by dual medium-speed marine diesel engines generating roughly 3,700 horsepower each. To balance engine torque and enhance maneuvering response, the engines counter-rotate and connect through specialized disengaging couplings, allowing the powerplants to idle continuously without spinning the propellers.
