Split hopper barges do not extract material independently; they rely on a specialized dredging fleet composed of trailing suction hopper dredgers and cutter suction dredgers. Trailing suction vessels vacuum up a dense mixture of sand and water called slurry as they crawl across the seabed, while cutter suction units utilize rotating cutter heads to pulverize compacted sediment before pumping it away.

The resulting slurry is transferred directly across discharge arms into the open hoppers of adjacent barges, allowing the dredgers to remain active while the split hoppers manage the transport cycle. This division of labor among specialized vessels enables continuous extraction, transport, and bottom-dumping operations, optimizing maritime efficiency across major coastal infrastructure projects.
