HOT WHEELS K6138 Shelby Cobra Daytona custom
The Shelby Daytona Coupe is one of the most iconic American racing cars of the 1960s. Developed by Carroll Shelby and designed by Peter Brock, the Daytona was created to solve the aerodynamic shortcomings of the AC Cobra on high-speed circuits. Powered by Ford's 289 cubic inch V8, the Daytona Coupe achieved international success against Ferrari, helping Shelby American secure the 1965 FIA World Sportscar Championship for GT manufacturers.
This Hot Wheels model was released as part of the mainline range in the 2007. This particular model was kindly sent to me by Michael. Like many childhood toys, it had seen better days after being painted during his younger years. An attempt had also been made to remove the old paint before it arrived, leaving behind a number of issues including paint residue on the windows and a generally rough finish.
In this custom project, I set out to bring the little Daytona back to life. The overpainted windows are cleaned up, the body is completely refinished, and the original tacky-looking wheels are replaced with a much more authentic set that better suit the car. I recreate the famous number 5 Shelby Daytona Coupe that won the GT class at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, complete with an accurate replica livery and decals inspired by the historic race-winning machine.
