There's a difference between paying someone back and actually healing them. And that difference changes everything about how you understand suffering.
In philosophy, there's a concept called compensation. Something bad happened, so God gives you something good to balance the scales. Sounds fair, right?
But think about it. Can you compensate someone for a betrayal by giving them a vacation? Can you make up for a destroyed reputation with a check? Some evils are so deep that no amount of good stuff cancels them out.
Then there's defeat. Defeat means the suffering itself gets woven into a redeemed story where the sufferer's life becomes genuinely whole. The evil isn't erased or balanced. It's overcome. Transformed.
Think about Jesus after the resurrection. He still had the scars from the nails. The wounds weren't hidden. They weren't healed over. They were transfigured. They became part of the most beautiful story ever told — the story where death itself was defeated.
That's what God does with suffering. He doesn't balance it out. He doesn't offer a consolation prize. He defeats it.
