...#toptipsontuesdays again and this week I want to show you a hearth board variation called the stepped hearth.

...This adaptation does away with cutting a notch & no ember pan is required as the ember is formed on the hearth board. 
.
...Basically the first ember is made by allowing the spindle to overlap the edge of the step by around a third & let the dust build up to the edge of the spindle, just like the "lazy man hearth." Subsequent embers are formed in the previous divot by stepping the spindle back to thirds.
.
...The benefits of this are that your ember is off the ground so there's no risk of it getting damp & once you've stepped back a couple of times the ember is more sheltered from the wind as it formed in the divot.
