The strangest thing about this Hulk game is who actually designed it. Back in 1992 US Gold hired two writers from the British magazine Mean Machines, Richard Leadbetter and Julian Rignall, to build the whole scenario. Real games press journalists, handed the keys to a Marvel game. Their idea was exactly what you would want from the Hulk. Trash tanks, mile long jumps, all out warfare with everything on screen.
Then Marvel stepped in. They objected to the Hulk killing human characters, and that one note reshaped the entire game. It is the reason almost every enemy you fight is a robot or a lab grown mutant instead of soldiers. The Leader builds a forest fortress, cranks out a robot army, and calls in four of the Hulk's rivals to stop you. Rhino, Absorbing Man, Abomination and Tyrannus.
The clever part is the gamma meter. It is your health and your power at the same time, and it pushes you between four different forms, from weak Bruce Banner all the way up to a supercharged Hulk Out mode. And here is the twist most people never expect from a Hulk game. Sometimes you have to turn back into Banner on purpose. He cannot fight and carries a pistol with just two shots, but he can crawl into gaps the Hulk is far too big to squeeze through. Smash a crate as Banner, grab a pill, and you are the Hulk again.
It came out in 1994 on Genesis, SNES, Master System and Game Gear, which is exactly why the ad is waving three different boxes at you. It took 18 months to build and actually got shown at CES back when it was only five percent finished. Reviews landed mixed. Everyone loved the giant colorful sprites and the pile of Hulk moves, but the controls were slow and you fought the same robot a lot. Even so, one modern ranking still put it as the second best Hulk game ever made, all on the strength of that transformation system.
