Tiger Road snuck a Dirty Harry reference into an arcade game about ancient Chinese martial arts, and honestly that combination alone makes it worth talking about. Capcom developed and published it in Japan in 1987 under the title Tora e no Michi, then licensed it to Romstar for a US release that December. You play Lee Wong, a master of the Tiger Technique of Oh-Lin, fighting through hordes of minions sent by the warlord Ryuken after his comrades were attacked and the village's children were abducted.
The gameplay mixes hack and slash combat with platforming, smashing magic urns scattered through each level for weapon upgrades while cutting down enemies that mostly die in a single hit but come at you in overwhelming numbers, until you reach tougher multi level indoor sections where a single mistake can get you killed instantly. One of the more memorable little details is that one of Lee Wong's victory lines against a mid boss is an exact lift of Go Ahead, Make My Day, the famous Dirty Harry line from Sudden Impact.
The US version actually changed a few things compared to the Japanese original, adding a stage select option that never existed in Japan while stripping out every voice clip from that release entirely. It clearly did well for Capcom regardless, landing in the top ten most successful arcade cabinets in Japan the very month it came out, and it later got remade for the PC Engine and TurboGrafx 16 in 1990, plus a wave of home computer ports across Europe and the US.
