Found this old local news story about Nintendo's real game counselor hotline and it goes deeper than most people realize.
Nintendo launched this hotline back in 1987, running it all the way until 2005, based right out of Nintendo of America's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, which is exactly what that news chyron is pointing to. Getting hired as a Game Play Counselor was seriously competitive too, with reports of around 800 applicants for just a few dozen spots, and once you got in you still had to go through weeks of training, playing through games, memorizing chokepoints and secrets, and passing a real test before you were allowed to take calls.
Here is the detail that always gets people, counselors were never allowed to say the word kill on a call. Nintendo wanted a family friendly image, so staff were trained to say defeat instead, and they were coached to guide callers toward figuring out bosses and hidden secrets themselves through hints rather than just handing over the answer. Callers dealt directly with actual employees using tools like hand drawn maps for tricky games, later replaced by an internal computer system nicknamed ELMO once the hotline modernized.
Did any of you ever actually call this hotline as a kid to get unstuck on a game? Let me know down below.
