There is a brutal little detail buried in this commercial that almost nobody catches. Kirby Super Star reached American shelves on September 20, 1996. The Nintendo 64 launched on September 29. Nine days. Nintendo was still buying television time for a brand new Super Nintendo game while the console that would bury the Super Nintendo was already sitting on trucks.

Look at the monitor in that lab set and you will spot the words Play It Loud. That was Nintendo's campaign from July 1994 through to September 1996, ten million dollars of it, built by the Chicago agency Leo Burnett. It was a genuine departure for them, selling a corporate attitude rather than a single machine or a single game, and their own marketing manager admitted the older ads had felt like an adult talking down to a child. This Kirby spot lands in the campaign's final month.

The game itself deserved better timing than that. HAL Laboratory built it under Masahiro Sakurai, the man who created Kirby and would go on to create Super Smash Bros., with Satoru Iwata producing and largely leaving him alone to get on with it. The box promised eight games in one cartridge and genuinely delivered, six proper adventures plus extras, finishing up in The Arena.

Here is the part that surprises people. Even though it was always meant for the Super Nintendo, the prototype was built on the original NES. Sakurai has said that internal version was nearly finished, and some of Kirby's animations ended up almost identical in the final game. Those NES sprites for the Yo-Yo and Cutter abilities did not surface publicly until Famitsu printed them more than twenty years afterwards.

The pre rendered look came from watching Donkey Kong Country clean up, and building that pipeline in house dragged development out to three whole years. Sakurai has since said he regrets the decision, feeling his team was not ready for it and that it never really suited Kirby, though he grants it taught them things they needed later. There was even a cut sub game called Kagero Mansion, a horror themed puzzle mode that never made it past the design document. Did this one land in your house before the N64 took over everything?
