The lateral squat is a hugely underutilized lower body exercise that is useful for both competitive athletes as well as general population clients.
They often get passed over in favor of more traditional squat and lunge variations but the lateral squat is a really valuable tool to develop frontal plan hip mobility and strength in the adductors and lateral hip muscles.
A few tips:
🔺Get the feet out wide. Most people set up too narrow, making it hard to sit into the hips.
🔺Start with an anterior reach with a light ball or plate to help you sit back deeper into your hips.
🔺Focus on getting good depth first and then progress to adding load.
🔺Once you get to goblet loading don’t be afraid to load it up! This is a great way to build strength in the adductors and lateral hips.
