'The Confession' will make its South Texas Premiere at the 31st Annual San Antonio Film Festival (SAFilm) on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. I had the opportunity to speak with writer-director Will Canon about the film’s upcoming screening, and he shared insight into its themes and production.

Set in rural East Texas, The Confession will offer a chilling twist on the Pied Piper legend. The story will follow Naomi Riley (Italia Ricci), a struggling musician returning to her hometown, where she will discover a haunting recording of her late father, a former pastor (Craig Kolkebeck), confessing to a murder influenced by a dark force called The Piper (Justin Matthew Smith). As her young son Dylan (Zachary Golinger) begins to exhibit disturbing behavior, Naomi will confront a sinister legacy threatening her family.

Canon’s 'The Confession' will blend spiritual horror with psychological tension, as Naomi navigates not just external threats, but also her strained relationship with faith. Terence Rosemore will deliver a standout performance as Harling, a deeply spiritual figure whose conversations with Naomi will ground the film’s theological themes. The return of Naomi’s childhood friend Grayson (Scott Mechlowicz) will add emotional depth, exploring memory, trauma, and redemption.

Shot in just 19 days, 'The Confession' will showcase Canon’s signature atmospheric style, previously seen in 'Demonic'. Viewers can expect a visually rich, suspenseful film driven by natural light and purposeful framing.

At its core, 'The Confession' will challenge audiences to reconsider the nature of belief—raising unsettling questions about faith, evil, and spiritual truth. Harling will underscore the value of genuine religious practices, including full-immersion baptism, in the face of unseen darkness.

I confessed that if he could make me enjoy Jesus Revolution a film about the rise of the Jesus Freaks Movement via the likes of Calvary Chapel, a church I have deep theological disagreements with, especially as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch (Acts 11:26, youll find us there), then I already knew he understood how to craft something compelling across ideological lines. That instinct proved correct, because with House of David, Gunn and his collaborators aren’t just retelling a biblical story, they’re shaping an experience that’s as spiritually complex as it is dramatically engaging. After season one drew more than 40 million viewers worldwide, the series returns not with a quiet continuation but with a sweeping escalation. All episodes drop at once, inviting viewers to fully immerse themselves in a narrative where faith, politics and destiny collide at a pivotal moment in Ancient Israel’s history. Season Two picks up as the kingdom teeters on the edge of collapse. King Saul’s grip is slipping, and into that vacuum steps David, still a shepherd at heart but increasingly shaped by war, loyalty and divine calling. The series leans into the tension between who David is and who he is becoming while the broader world around him transforms. The Iron Age isn’t just a backdrop, it’s revolutionary, reshaping warfare, power structures and the very idea of kingship. Too rigid and the story risks feeling distant or inaccessible, too interpretive and it risks alienating viewers who hold the text sacred. What House of David attempts and succeeds at, is finding that middle ground where emotional truth enhances rather than undermines the biblical account. That challenge becomes even more layered when you consider the dual theological lenses the show operates within. The story of David is foundational to both Judaism and Christianity, but the interpretations, emphases and implications differ. Gunn emphasized that the creative team is deeply aware of this tension and had theological advisors to help guide the narrative from both faiths. Rather than flatten those differences, the series tries to respect them, presenting a narrative that resonates across traditions while still allowing space for distinct readings. It’s not about resolving theological debates but about honoring the weight of it. The cast carries that ambition with remarkable gravity. Michael Iskander continues to shape David as both vulnerable and formidable, capturing the internal conflict that defines the character. Ali Suliman’s Saul is increasingly tragic, a king unraveling under the pressure of lost favor and fading authority. Ayelet Zurer and Stephen Lang round out a cast that understands the scale of the story they’re telling—not just in spectacle but in spiritual consequence. Looking ahead, Gunn hinted at a long-term vision that extends well beyond this season.
