I spoke with Elizabeth Guest about her new film 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off', which will screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival at noon on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Lido Theater.
The film follows Lydia (played by Guest), a self-described love addict who believes she’s finally ready for stability when she falls for dependable Tim (Andrew Leeds). But when he proposes during a picture-perfect Christmas trip to New York, Lydia panics, torches the fantasy and bolts back to Los Angeles. Heartbroken, she moves in with her four parents, who try to mend her love life by throwing a New Year’s Eve party packed with eligible bachelors.
As Lydia navigates a house full of suitors, Tim unexpectedly returns just before midnight. What follows is a chaotic, heartfelt sprint through romantic mayhem as Lydia must decide if she’s ready to choose the love she keeps running from.
Guest's film was inspired by her web series 'Guest Appearances', which in turn drew from her own turbulent dating history. In her early twenties, she experienced intense anxiety around relationships, fear of getting hurt or hurting someone else. Writing became her outlet, helping her transform emotional overwhelm into something both humorous and honest.
Rather than waiting for her romantic mishaps to become funny over time, she used storytelling to find the comedy in them immediately. Classic romantic comedies like 'It Happened One Night', 'Notting Hill' and 'Bridget Jones’s Diary', often starring Hugh Grant, offered her comfort during heartbreak and she hopes 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off' can do the same for others.
