No modern man embodies the words of Plato when it comes to the ideal citizen, than the human specimen himself, Dolph Lundgren and that is proven within his documentary 'Dolph: Unbreakable' during the Newport Beach Film Festival Swedish Spotlight.
Lundgren, to paraphrase Sylvester Stallone, is a man you’re in awe of, yet envy.Here stands a 6'5", blonde-haired, blue-eyed Viking with a jawline that could cut diamonds. A polyglot fluent in nine languages, he holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to recipient to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a fourth degree black belt in Kyokushin karate leading to multiple full contact karate championships, a world-class musician, a model, actor, writer, director, founder of Hard Cut Vodka and most impressively, cancer survivor. Directed by Andrew Holmes, 'Dolph: Unbreakable' chronicles the life of a then Hans Lundgren, who was the eldest child of Karl Lundgren's second marriage and suffered abuse at the hands of the family patriarch, eventually leading him to be sent to live with his grandparents. That move from abused child turned troublemaker to top of his class karate champion proving that environment proving how environment can shape destiny.
From karate champion to bodyguard and romantic partner of pop icon Grace Jones, then to actor and instant legend as Ivan Drago in 'Rocky IV', Lundgren admits that fame did him no favors. It transformed a well-adjusted scientist into a hard-partying celebrity, ultimately destroying his first marriage to Anette Qviberg. Yet redemption came in time, as he confronted his inner demons and rebuilt his relationship with his children.
Just as things took an upturn and he met his second wife Emma Krokdal, upon the week of engagement, Lundgren discovered he had kidney cancer. After years of mismanaged treatment and a grim prognosis with a declaration of only given three months to live, it was Dr. Alexandra Drakaki at UCLA discovered that the cancer’s mutation aligned more closely with lung cancer. She adjusted his treatment plan, and within two weeks, he was on the mend.
