May 1996: Storm chasing as a subject is swept up into a media whirlwind to coincide with the theatrical release of the motion picture 'Twister' along with two other made for television movies around the same time, the FOX television network's 'Tornado' and 'Night of the Twisters' which premiered on The Family Channel a month earlier. All of compounded on the heels of a US government funded two season field project called VORTEX [Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment] that spring loaded a next generation of meteorologists, storm chasers and weather enthusiasts,
This complication of storm chase related news media recorded off-air at the time consists of various national and local news affiliates from the Kansas City region combined with CNN's 'Talk Back LIVE' a call in program that merged audience interaction, early internet e-mail and video chat. The original tape was donated to the Storm Chasing Anthology documentary project and is presented here once again for historical posterity.
