St. Elmo Pass is a rarely visited destination within Mt. Rainier National Park. The knife-like ridge forms the northwestern side of 'The Wedge,' a massive cleaver with Steamboat Prow as its apex. The route begins at White River Campground, winding through dense forest before reaching Glacier Basin Camp. Beyond this point, the trail is unmaintained, quickly transitioning into a tundra-like landscape of rock and ice. Dilapidated mine shafts serve as a testament to the miners who once sought mineral wealth here. To reach the pass, you must navigate 800 vertical feet of loose talus after leaving the route to Steamboat Prow. On the day we climbed, fast-moving clouds obscured Winthrop Glacier and much of Mt. Rainier's upper slopes. However, the view from the pass was nonetheless fantastic, making all our effort worthwhile.
