Tatoosh Lookout is the site of a former fire lookout atop Tatoosh Peak, just south of Mount Rainier near Packwood, Washington. Though the structure is long gone, the hike offers one of the most spectacular alpine ridge walks in the state. Summer brings stunning displays of avalanche lilies, lupine, paintbrush, and other alpine flowers carpeting the ridge and surrounding slopes. Once on the ridge, you’re treated to striking views of Mount Rainier to the north, with Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, and even Mount Hood visible in the distance. Just below the summit lies a small glacial tarn, often still partially frozen in early summer, providing a classic foreground for photos of Rainier. Overall, this destination is a wonderful place to enjoy breathtaking alpine scenery—and long stretches of complete solitude.
