Hiking to Silver Peak from Windy Pass via the Pacific Crest Trail on an unseasonably sunny, warm December day felt more like spring than winter. After recent historic torrential rains, the trail was mostly intact, with several runoff crossings adding to the adventure. The Forest Service road to the Windy Pass trailhead was badly rutted but still passable with a high-clearance vehicle. For December, the lack of snow was striking—the summit was completely snow-free except for its east slope. Clear skies and mild temperatures made this hike feel unseasonably gentle, like a borrowed spring day rather than a typical mid-December outing.
