The summit of Lookout Mountain, near Marblemount, Washington, is crowned by a historic fire lookout and recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Open to the public, the lookout offers sweeping 360-degree views that showcase the grandeur of the North Cascades. On a cold, crisp winter’s day, we set out to ascend the mountain and spend the night in this desolate outpost. The trail to the summit climbs 4,500 feet in elevation, with conditions that can become treacherous when snow and ice blanket the upper slopes, making navigation particularly challenging. Unlike other destinations in the region, Lookout Mountain not only rewards visitors with a breathtaking panoramic view but also offers a rare sense of peace and solitude.
