Paperboy Peak is a seldom-climbed mountain located within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, just north of the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area. There is no trail to the summit, requiring navigation across several creek crossings, dense brush, and stretches of large boulders and talus. This challenging terrain is why we chose to attempt this summit on a January day, after a cold Arctic blast froze the otherwise soft snow.
In this video, we begin our hike along the Taylor River and continue along forest service roads until reaching the cross-country route. Although we brought snowshoes, they were unnecessary given the conditions we encountered. However, crampons and ice axes would have been helpful during the final summit push.
The panoramic view from the summit made all our efforts worthwhile. The vista stretches from the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound to most of the peaks in the central Cascade Range. Overall, this destination is an excellent place to experience mountain splendor in complete solitude.
