Laguna Llaca is a high-altitude, glacial-fed lake located in the Ancash Region of Peru, nestled within the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. It is part of the Andes and lies within Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two weeks before our arrival, a glacial outburst sent about a cubic kilometer of debris thundering into the Llaca Valley, wiping out the primitive road. Global warming is making these events increasingly common and poses a real threat to the people living there. In this video, we scramble across the debris field to the lake and then follow a climbing route to over 16,000 feet to check out the source of the glacial outburst. We were stunned to find a newly formed deep canyon and an eerie, mustard-colored lake where two sapphire-colored lakes had recently existed. Overall, this area is quieter and more serene than many other destinations above Huaraz, making it a great place to enjoy stunning mountain scenery and geological wonders.
