Grindstone Mountain is one of the most striking peaks near Leavenworth, Washington, yet it remains surprisingly seldom climbed. Its 7,533-foot (2,296-meter) summit rises over 4,700 feet above the Icicle Creek Valley, just two miles to the south. Depending on the season, this mountain can offer a challenging snow climb, a rewarding summer scramble, or a fall hike showcasing some of the state’s most stunning foliage. We chose to tackle this summit in early May, when deep snow still blanketed its upper reaches. Strong scrambling and route-finding skills are essential, but the panoramic views of soaring mountain peaks unfolding before you make all your effort worthwhile.
