I stopped by UP’s Sparks yard the morning of March25 and noticed a westbound UP container train at the east end of the yard. I decided to head to the west end of the yard where access is available on a public street. As I exited the car, I saw the four road engines pulling three double stack cars in my direction. I was treated to quite a show as the locomotives passed me by, reversed into a siding and pushed the cars into a spur track. They then returned to the main line and backed up to reconnect to the other cars. A few minutes later the train was headed west towards California.
I quickly returned to my car and jumped on westbound I80 intending to catch the train at Verdi NV arriving with about five minutes to spare. It took about four minutes for the entire consist to clear the road crossing and travel through the high-wide detector about a half mile west. My scanner told me that 444 axels had passed through the detection equipment.
