Slide Mountain Lookout is a 10-mile out-and-back with 2,000 feet of gain in the Los Padres National Forest. The route starts on an abandoned highway through Piru Gorge, then climbs dirt trail to a staffed fire lookout with views into the Sespe Wilderness. The trailhead is remote and requires a long drive from Los Angeles, but the combination of surreal scenery and backcountry views makes it worth the effort. Best hiked in cooler months due to exposed climbing sections.
