Guadalupe Peak sits at 8,751 feet and earns its highpoint status with 3,000 feet of gain over 8.4 miles round trip. The first mile and a half is the crux: uneven stone steps, tight switchbacks, and exposed Chihuahuan Desert sun. After that initial push, the trail moves into cooler north-facing slopes with ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir, settling into steadier grades and better footing. The route is non-technical but demands fitness and early starts to avoid afternoon heat. No permit required. Plan for a full day, bring plenty of water, and expect the views to open up as you climb above the desert floor into alpine terrain.
