On May 13, 2024. An officer from the Lake Mills Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a van that was swerving and not maintaining speed. The officer made contact with the driver (Martin) and could see open cans of Modelo beer in the cup holders and multiple empty cans of beer scattered around the vehicle. Martin was showing signs of impairment and did not speak English very well. The officer went back to his squad car and requested assistance from the sheriff's department. Martin exited his vehicle without being asked to and began walking towards the officer’s. They decided to search Martin and located a wallet but it did not contain an ID card. An officer used a translation app on his phone to communicate with Martin and explain the field sobriety test directions. Martin later refused a PBT and a search of the van revealed numerous open cans of beer, most of which were empty or had small amounts of alcohol in them. There were also two cans of beer in the cupholder, both of which had half to three-quarters full of cold beer inside the cans. No other items of evidentiary value were located inside of the vehicle. Martin initially provided a false name but eventually provided his real name. He was taken to the hospital for a blood draw before being transported to jail. Martin was found guilty for OWI (2nd). He was sentenced to 150 days in jail and ordered to pay over $1,800 in fines.
