On September 23, 2025. Deputies from the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department responded to a retail store for the report of a theft. When deputies arrived, employees provided them with a picture of the suspect and stated that he left on a scooter after stealing a “mini chainsaw”. Shortly later, a deputy observed a male riding an electric scooter that strongly resembled the suspect. The deputy shouted from his squad “Hold up boss”, “Stop, Sheriff’s Department”, and “Stop right there”. The male, later identified as Leonard, looked back at the squad car before taking off through a parking lot. Leonard then fled onto the street and was tackled off his scooter by a responding deputy.
Immediately after being tackled, Leonard began complaining of severe back pain and EMS was called to the scene. When asked where his ID was, Leonard explained that he had a photo of it on his phone and gave deputies permission to search for it. Deputies were unable to locate the photo, and Leonard falsely identified himself as “Charles.” Leonard asked why he was tackled and deputies informed him it was because he reportedly stole a mini chainsaw and fled when told to stop. Leonard denied stealing anything but mentioned he had a saw in his backpack and gave deputies permission to search it.
While searching the backpack, deputies located the mini chainsaw that was reported stolen along with deodorant that was reported stolen by another store. EMS arrived and loaded Leonard into an ambulance. One of the deputies cut his face on something while tackling Leonard and also sought medical attention. Leonard was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being transported to the Sheboygan County Jail and was released to jail staff.
He was found guilty for Obstructing an Officer Causing Soft Tissue Injury and Retail Theft. Leonard was sentenced to 3 years in prison and 3 years of extended supervision.
