On March 12th, 2024. A Captain from the Glendale Police Department located a stolen Honda Accord and requested further assistance. Marked squad cars were able to catch up to the suspect vehicle and officers activated their emergency lights. The Honda disregarded the lights and continued to drive at speeds around 55 mph. Approximately one minute later, the driver changed lanes and sped up to speeds near 70mph as it began to flee from officers. The Captain threw a single Stop Stick out of his squad window which successfully deflated the front passenger tire of the fleeing vehicle. Immediately after, the Honda nearly rear ended a civilian vehicle. The Honda quickly went around that civilian vehicle and sped up to speeds around 65mph and exited the highway. This exit ramp was near a construction area with workers present. While negotiating a curve in the off ramp, the Honda lost control and nearly struck another civilian vehicle. At the end of the off ramp there was heavy traffic stopped at the red light. The Honda went around the traffic and entered the construction area. The driver lost control due to the front passenger tire being flat and struck a wall before driving off the road. The driver of the Honda continued to flee until it got stuck in a muddy/gravel area. The driver later identified as Javier fled from the vehicle towards the freeway. An officer exited his squad car and yelled at Javier to stop. Javier disregarded commands and continued to flee on foot. An officer was able to catch up to Javier and took him into custody on the freeway. Javier admitted to having a needle on him which an officer later located when he was being searched. Another officer stayed with the vehicle and identified the passenger as Marcus. Dispatch confirmed the vehicle was stolen and Marcus was informed that he was going to be transported to the police department but was not in trouble at the moment. Javier was transported to the Glendale Police Department and Marcus was transported to the hospital after requesting to go. A search of the vehicle revealed a crack pipe. Javier was found guilty for Flee Or Elude An Officer and Second Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety. He was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison and 4 years of extended supervision. Javier was also ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and pay $1036 in fines. The passenger Marcus was later released without any charges.
