On July 27, 2024. An officer from the Sun Prairie Police Department conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle with an expired registration. When the vehicle stopped, the driver's door opened and a black male (James) fled on foot. The officer decided to pursue James on foot but quickly lost sight when he jumped multiple fences. Unknown to law enforcement at the time, there were still two occupants inside of the vehicle. One of the occupants exited the vehicle and walked away from the scene. While the other occupant (Freddie) exited the vehicle and stayed at the scene. The officer that was chasing the suspect on foot went back to the original traffic stop location and detained Freddie who was standing by the driver’s side door. Freddie had no weapons on him and was questioned. He stated that it was his car but his friend James was driving because James didn't like the way he drives. Freddie and his vehicle were released but it was later discovered that he lied about James’s real last name. A K9 from the Madison Police Department was called to try and track James' scent. While doing a K9 track, officers observed a dark colored sedan very similar to Freddies. The vehicle stopped and officers heard a car door close before the vehicle began driving again. Once again, the vehicle was stopped and Freddie was ordered to exit and was secured in the back of the squad car. The passenger, James was then ordered to step out of the vehicle and was also secured in the back of a squad car. Freddie was questioned again but later released without any charges after he admitted that it was indeed the James that they had in custody who fled earlier. James denied being involved and said that he was just picked up from a girl's house. He refused to do a breathalyzer and was transported to the hospital for a blood draw. The laboratory later confirmed that James had a BAC of .012 which is under the legal limit. His operating While Intoxicated Charge was dismissed, however he was found guilty for Disorderly Conduct and ordered to pay a $181 fine.
