Situation Briefing on the Effects and Response Actions for Enhanced Southwest Monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay and Neneng

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. presided over a situation briefing on the effects and response actions related to the Enhanced Southwest Monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay and Neneng at the new Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Head Office in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City on August 19, 2026.
Discussions focused on flooding in Metro Manila and other affected areas, with officials reporting that floodwaters are receding more quickly due to sustained dredging, expanded drainage systems and the continued operation of pumping stations.
The President directed the relevant government agencies to sustain dredging and pumping operations, replace aging drainage systems, and upgrade seawalls and other flood-control and water-management infrastructure. He also ordered the completion, within the month, of detailed engineering designs for 30 identified sites for underground water storage facilities.
Moreover, President Marcos Jr. emphasized the need to explore water capture and reuse systems to use collected water for household, industrial and irrigation purposes rather than discharging it into the sea. He underscored the importance of pursuing these measures alongside long-term, integrated flood management solutions to strengthen the country’s resilience to flooding.
