President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony at Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City, honoring outgoing AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. and welcoming Lieutenant General Antonio G. Nafarrete as his successor.

As Commander-in-Chief, the President lauded General Brawner upon the completion of his fixed three-year term under Republic Act No. 11939, known as ‘An Act Further Strengthening Professionalism and Promoting the Continuity of Policies and Modernization Initiatives in the Armed Forces of the Philippines,’ which was signed in 2023.

The outgoing Chief of Staff was also recognized for his leadership in strengthening the AFP’s internal security operations, West Philippine Sea patrols, disaster response, modernization and cooperation with allies.

“General Brawner, maraming salamat sa iyong tapat at marangal na pagse-serbisyo. Hindi naging madali ang iyong paglilingkod. Ngunit sa bawat pagsubok, ipinakita mo ang katatagan, disiplina, at pagmamahal sa ating bayan,” he said.

President Marcos Jr. also congratulated Lieutenant General Nafarrete, citing his extensive leadership experience in the 1st and 6th Infantry Divisions, Western Mindanao Command and the Philippine Army.

“You now inherit a force made stronger by those who came before you. Your task is now to build upon that,” he said, assuring him of the Administration’s continued support for the AFP’s capabilities, readiness and welfare, while emphasizing that the Philippines seeks peace but will never compromise its sovereignty.

“The command changes hands, but the mission remains. And the duty to defend our flag never ends,” President Marcos Jr. said as he concluded his message.
