President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. attended the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) Presidential Luncheon at the Diamond Hotel in the City of Manila on 14 August 2026, where he underscored the important role of foreign correspondents in telling the story of the Philippines to the world and in helping Filipinos better understand the world around them.
In his speech, the President emphasized that the responsibility of journalists has become more demanding because information, whether true or fabricated, including artificial intelligence (AI)-generated and deliberately manipulated content, can spread instantly across digital platforms. He reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom, stressing that the President's role is to defend it, not diminish it.
“Through the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, we also continue to strengthen legal assistance, intelligent coordination, and cybercrime response mechanisms to better protect media practitioners,” he stated.
The Chief Executive also recognized media practitioners, including photojournalists, as partners in advancing good governance and transparency. He highlighted the government’s efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the anomalous implementation of government infrastructure projects and to ensure that these projects deliver the services the people need.
He also raised concerns about the influence of social media and online platforms on children, noting government efforts to expand digital literacy initiatives, modernize cybersecurity capabilities and promote the holistic well-being of every Filipino while upholding freedom of expression.
“At the same time, the government remains steadfast and responsive in protecting the public’s right to accurate information,” the President added.
President Marcos Jr. called on the government and the media to continue working toward their shared interest in pursuing the truth. He also urged the public to sustain a Bagong Pilipinas where democracy is strengthened by informed, discerning and free citizens.
