Saib is not new to Rock With This. His music has serenaded our sunny afternoons for several years. From concept albums like Bop, based on Cowboy BeBop, or Sailing, which reminds me of an afternoon spent picnicking on the beach in Capitola (shout out to our NorCal listeners), Saib weaves his jazzy blues guitar across a chill groove that sets a mood of ease, relaxation, and wonder.
Hailing from Casablanca, Morocco, Saib shows the diversity of his musical interests in a recently Remastered album, Around the World. Each song holds a distinct narrative, a story of a life filled with exploration and affirmation. The album navigates the world of sound, flowing between swing, gypsy jazz, bossa nova, and funk.
“Journey” is just that. Saib’s soothing guitar entices the listener into an acid jazz groove familiar to other multi-instrumentalists, like FKJ. The hallowed echo of steel drums and a tambourine snare work to ground the ethereal guitar solo and drive the song through the warm embrace of the melody. The Effect is primal. Each instrument fades into an echoed chamber until the beat drops. In some ways, the musings are simple, yet beautiful. They showcase the immense talent of the musician, while not revealing his strengths as a producer - a skill he begins to define in later outings.
“Journey” pivots the album. It allows the listener to look beyond our dream vacations of Rio, Shanghai, and Casablanca, and set our destination skyward. An astral projection, Journey navigates the surreal bringing the listener to a plane best reserved for those basking adrift.
