...After my first attempt at the reverse bow drill I could see I needed a different approach as the high humidity level was suffocating the notchless ember in the end of the spindle. I needed a way to form the ember on It's own & that made me think of the strap drill hearth where the ember forms above the point of friction through a hole or a crack in the hearth.

...I cut a short hearth, burned in a divot then drilled a hole through to the other side then made a divot on that side where the ember could form. I then made a stepped hand hold that fit over the hearth to apply downwards pressure.

...There was a bit of a stability issue but once I got a feel for it the ember was formed without too much trouble. One clear advantage with this is that the hearth is away from the ground & the ember is also covered so this idea could technically work even if it was raining.
