Raya and the Last Dragon is not necessarily the typical Disney classic you think it's going to be. But that's both good AND bad. Raya can seem extremely familiar, as it's plot points follow the typical 'Disney Formula' fare, but there's a Twist... the filmmakers did try a lot of new things. This is a much more mature Disney animated film than they've produced in a long time.
Starring Star Wars' Kelly Marie Tran, Raya follows the story of a young warrior who must summon the last mighty water dragon who once saved the world from the faceless blight that once again threatens to consume the world. To do so, she has to band together with members of each of the world's tribes - tribes that hate one another and where trust is in short supply.
The rest of the amazing voice cast includes Awkwafina, Bendict Wong, Daniel Dae Kim, Gemma Chan and Sandra Oh, and once again is a great fictional representation of the diverse cultures that Disney has been ignoring for decades. One thing you can definitely take away from new Disney films, is they are finally recognizing the amazing flavours of the world, and the stories different cultures tell.
