Pacing can be a difficult job. We rely on GPS an km (or mile) markers to be correct... both of which have margins of error associated with them. Usually they are reliable enough to get the pacing correct, however... This hilly trail race was really hard to pace and the final km marker was way off which, combined with there being a big hill in the final 800m, meant lots of us came in slightly over our time. I can't tell you how incredibly frustrating it is when this happens. You feel like you've let everyone down and it's just such a horrible feeling!
This video tells the story of attempting to pace sub 60 at the Priory 10km while volunteering for Northern Pacing Volunteers. Despite the terrible pacing then the race itself was awesome, although the final hill is a beast! After a race like this it's time to recollect your thoughts and move on. Not everything can go right all the time, mistakes are a part of life.
