This is the third piece I have recorded from a collection of contemporary reimaginings of organ music by the Victorian composer Caleb Simper. The publication is entitled Preludes, Postludes and Interludes, with the subtitle Versatile Organ Works for the Worship Service. The pieces were freely arranged by Michael Ryan and published by Lorenz in 2012.
The piece presented here, Prayer in E-flat major, is beautiful beyond words. After recording it, I simply sat at the organ bench in silence for ten minutes, absorbing what I had just played. The music has a remarkable atmosphere and emotional depth that stayed with me long after the final chord had faded away.
For this reason, I decided to create a more artistic video than usual, incorporating footage I captured today during a dramatic spell of stormy weather. Somehow, the shifting clouds and changing light seemed to reflect the character of the music perfectly.
Performed on the Marcussen organ of the Laurenskerk, Rotterdam, via Hauptwerk.
