Sandpaper is one of my earlier original compositions, written as Op. 7. It is a light-hearted Rhumba for Organ, inspired by the infectious rhythms and warm atmosphere of Latin dance music.
Although the organ is not the first instrument that comes to mind for this style, I enjoyed exploring how its colourful sounds and rhythmic possibilities could bring this music to life.
The piece is built around three statements of the same theme. In the opening section, the melody is supported by four-note chords in the right hand, creating a harmonic texture that deliberately feels slightly rough and unsettled. In the middle section, the right hand continues to “rub” against the harmony, maintaining that subtle sense of friction. Finally, in the last section, the harmony shifts to the left hand in three-note chords, giving the music a smoother and more relaxed character.
I also play this final section just a touch faster, helping to underline the joyful, carefree spirit of the music.
The title Sandpaper refers to this deliberate harmonic “roughness.” Like sandpaper, the music gently scrapes rather than glides, adding just enough friction to evoke the warm, sultry atmosphere of a Latin rhumba. It’s a playful contrast between rhythmic elegance and harmonic tension that gives the piece its own personality.
I hope you enjoy this performance. I played it free and improvisational. The original does have a repeat and a quieter middle piece.
