A small forgotten treasure from the German Romantic organ repertoire. My family call this genre "Real Church Music." hahaha
Hermann Küster (1817–1878) was a German organist, composer and music director. Born in Templin, he received his early musical training from the local cantor before continuing his studies in Berlin, where his teachers included Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen and Adolph Bernhard Marx.
In 1845 Küster became Musikdirektor in Saarbrücken. He later returned to Berlin and, in 1857, succeeded Eduard Grell as Hof- und Domorganist. Küster was a remarkably versatile composer, writing operas, oratorios, cantatas, motets, songs, orchestral works and music for the organ.
Today, however, his name has largely disappeared from the organ repertoire.
This Andante Moderato survives as a postlude and is a fine example of the kind of concise, lyrical organ music written for practical use in the nineteenth century. Nothing grand or monumental, but warm, elegant and beautifully proportioned.

I recorded it on the organ of St. Margaret in Munich, an instrument whose Romantic character seems particularly well suited to this music.
