Getting some practice in for Gamex this weekend...tons of Power Grid tournaments there!
France is Stein's other preferred map for 5P along with Germany, which makes sense; France has 1 fewer plant in the deck than normal (no 13, remember!) so you're more likely to reach the Step 3 auction. That didn't quite pan out here, though!
This game ended up as a battle of money vs. early capacity, with me being forced into the latter strategy after the early game didn't work out so well. In retrospect i should've been willing to bid more for the 11 - maybe $23 or so. That plant pretty much won Stein the game thanks to the efficiency & turn-order advantage, allowing him to pick his spots for big plants later. Didn't think that would work out so well in a 5er, but you learn new things every day in this game!
Interestingly, though my strategy here had a poor chance of actually winning, it would be a nice Plan B for the Strategicon tournaments! Those give out points in each game for 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. and this big-capacity approach for 5P is really good at finishing 2nd.
Was surprised by Stein buying 23, but looking back it made sense since the players after him were either much lower on capacity or too poor to buy anything. That let him match me in capacity and end it for the easy win. Granted, i think Stein still would've won with another turn since he had an easy route to 17 capacity and nobody else was beating that, but 23 was perfectly safe here.
