Ah ha! Here is something a bit different! Someone asked me to try this one, and having not actually heard it for 20 years, I thought, wow, yeah, I remember that one, that will be fun!
Humph! To be honest, I have got very frustrated with this! Getting all the crash/snare accents in the right place, and doing the right fills at the right time in what I will call 'the middle eight'.....shit! I only once got this absolutely spot on, on camera. And that was yesterday. And on that take, when I reviewed it happily thinking 'got it!', I found it had no background fucking music! The sound levels were all wrong! AAArrrggghhh!
So today, the best I could do was this. I am not 100% happy, 'cos it ain't as good as yesterday. But it will have to do. Sorry.
I presume that this is two drum tracks, even in the studio. I believe Chester T does the hi hat and bass drum groove, and Phil does the fancy stuff on top. Please tell me if I am wrong.
Anyway, trying to play both(?) parts by yourself is fiendishly hard. You just cannot keep that hi hat sticking going (at least, I can't, anyway). I experimented with doing fancy doubles on my left hand, where I would somehow keep the hi hat groove going whilst managing to catch the snare for an accent as well. It just did not work out for me. I bet Steve Gadd could do it.
The real fun is trying to keep the bass drum hits going throughout some of the bigger fills. Wild! It required me to pull some funny faces.
The middle eight is horrible. The crash/snare accents are all over the place, and the fills get in the way, and they change, and you have to keep the hi hat and bass drum groove going, and frankly, it is fucking hectic. I nailed this yesterday, and today, well, pants..... see for yourself.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it. I am glad to see the back of it, 'cos I seem to have been practising it for weeks!
