The games media spent two years holding Palworld up as the game Pokemon should be, but the moment anyone points out where the Pal designs came from, they get told they are coping. You cannot have it both ways, and this video is about that double standard.
An opinion piece on Palworld, Pokemon and the conversation nobody is allowed to have.
To be clear from the start, this is not a Palworld hit piece. I played the game properly in Early Access and enjoyed my time with it. This is about the dishonesty in the conversation around it, from the pedestal the media built for Palworld as a stick to beat Game Freak with, to the instant dismissal of anyone who points at a Pal and sees a Pokemon.
The video covers the new Legendary Pal Panthalus and its striking resemblance to Kyogre, the wider pattern across Pals like Fenglope, Anubis, Verdash and Robinquill, and the part that settles the whole debate. With the 1.0 update, Pocketpair quietly redesigned at least four of the Pals most frequently compared to Pokemon, with the changes left completely out of the enormous patch notes, and even Palworld's own community welcomed the reworks while openly describing the old designs as too close to their inspirations.
Taking inspiration is fine, every creature collector does it, including Pokemon itself. But there is a line between inspired by and traced over, and the developer going back to fix the exact designs people spent two years pointing at tells you everything. Let me know where you land on this one in the comments, and be honest with yourself when you answer.
