Our partners, YIARI, rushed to Sampurna’s aid with BKSDA. He was unconscious, his breathing badly affected after days of thick smoke from the fires around his habitat. The team gave him oxygen and fluids there on the ground before taking him to the YIARI center for further treatment. Sadly, he did not make it and later passed away.
Watching those breathing tubes go in is incredibly hard. Sampurna had no burns on his body, but the smoke had already done serious damage. His lungs were struggling. His body was struggling. He had simply breathed in too much.
This is why the fight against these fires cannot slow down.
We need to help reach orangutans before the smoke overwhelms them. Before they are forced out of the forest. Before they are found collapsed, unable to breathe.
Funds are urgently needed for firefighting equipment, more people on the ground, 24-hour response, and the work that helps BKSDA/ Ministry of Forestry and YIARI reach orangutans in danger and get them to safety as quickly as possible. Sampurna was the seventh orangutan helped during August alone as fires continued across the area.
Please help us stop more orangutans from becoming victims like Sampurna.
