A wild orangutan is back where he belongs after a joint rescue and return to the wild.
Our partners, YIARI, worked alongside BKSDA West Kalimantan, Gunung Palung National Park authorities, TNI-Polri, and local communities to safely return the orangutan after he was found repeatedly entering plantation land and staying in villagers’ coconut gardens.
He was released back into Gunung Palung National Park, where he originally came from. He was found to be in generally good health, with healed natural injuries likely caused by the surrounding environment. Once released, he quickly moved off into the forest, showing all the signs of a truly wild orangutan ready to be home again.
This was a real joint effort between the authorities, our partners, and the local community, all working together to protect orangutans and reduce conflict before it turns dangerous for people or wildlife.
