Subnautica 2 has an upcoming new biome tied to the Collector Leviathan, and while we do not have the official name yet, I’m calling it the Sparse Biome for now because of how it has been described: deep, dark, cloudy, hard to see, and sparsely populated by both plants and animals.
Unknown Worlds has described the next major region as the home of the Collector Leviathan, and design lead Anthony Gallegos teased that the next region will include a new Tadpole chassis that brings back one of the most requested player experiences, telling players to “get stompy.” GamesRadar reported that the new region will also include new creatures, new resources, and story-driven progression, while Wccftech reported that the new chassis is tied to the next region and is expected to fill a Prawn Suit-like role.
For now, the biome does not have an official public name, so Sparse Biome is just a temporary nickname. It fits because this area seems very different from the colorful starter zones. Instead of bright reefs packed with life, this new region sounds like a deep, foggy, low-visibility zone with fewer animals, fewer plants, and a much more unsettling atmosphere.
The main gameplay reason to enter this biome appears to be the new Sea Frog Chassis for the Tadpole submarine. This looks like Subnautica 2’s new version of the Prawn Suit idea, except instead of being a totally separate vehicle, it appears to be another chassis for the Tadpole. The big difference is that the Sea Frog sounds like it will give us the heavier utility we need to survive and explore this dangerous new region.
To unlock it, players may need to travel down into the Sparse Biome, trawl along the bottom, and hunt for Sea Frog Chassis fragments. That means this probably will not be a simple recipe unlock. You will need to push into a dark, dangerous, low-visibility region, search the seafloor, avoid or survive new hostile creatures, and scan enough fragments to unlock the blueprint.
That makes the Sparse Biome sound like a major progression gate. You do not just casually swim through it. You go down there because you need the Sea Frog Chassis, and the Sea Frog Chassis may be the exact tool that makes the area survivable.
What we will actually be doing in this biome is still unknown. It may connect to the next major story mission, the Collector Leviathan’s territory, new resources, new creature encounters, future base or vehicle upgrades, or deeper progression toward later parts of the map. But based on what has been teased so far, this region sounds like it will be one of the scariest areas in Subnautica 2.
