If you are a retro gaming enthusiast, you already know the painful truth: the Nintendo 64 is traditionally a system that is incredibly difficult to get a good, high-quality picture out of on modern flat-screen displays. Between the system's native incredibly low internal resolution and its aggressive, infamous hardware-level anti-aliasing (which basically smears Vaseline all over your games), getting crisp pixels out of this 64-bit console is a massive challenge.
That is exactly why today we are going to check out the ultimate hardware solution and see what the N64 actually looks like when going through the brand-new PixelFX Morph 4K upscaler! Can the N64 be upscaled to 4K? We're going to show you the good, the bad, & the jaggy results in our latest in our series of 4K tests.
The Ultimate N64 Hardware Setup: Voultar RGB & HD Retrovision
To give the Morph 4K the absolute best possible analog signal to work with, we are not just using a stock, unmodded console with standard composite cables. Out of the box, the N64 does not natively output an RGB signal, which is a massive bummer for videophiles. To fix this, I have personally modified this specific Nintendo 64 console using Voultar's legendary N64 RGB Mod kit. This bypass cleanly restores the crisp RGB video output that Nintendo originally stripped from the motherboard.
To carry that newly restored, pristine analog video signal straight into our upscaler, we are utilizing a set of high-quality HD Retrovision Component Video Cables. HD Retrovision cables are heavily shielded and perfectly designed to convert that pure RGB signal into flawless YPbPr component video. By feeding this incredibly clean, modded signal into the Morph 4K, we are giving the upscaler the cleanest possible canvas to work its magic and scale the image all the way up to a stunning 4K resolution!
Super Mario 64 Gameplay Impressions & Controller Woes
For this test, we are booting up the absolute gold standard of 3D platformers: Super Mario 64. Let's take a look at the results!
Right away, looking at the footage, I am definitely seeing some jagginess around the polygonal models. However, that is absolutely not out of the norm, nor is it a fault of the Morph 4K! In fact, seeing those sharp, jagged edges means the scaler is doing its job perfectly by presenting the raw, unfiltered N64 pixels without any blurry composite noise. The colors look incredibly vibrant and punchy thanks to the RGB mod, and the sound is perfectly crisp as well, which is great to hear. The draw distance and environmental details look exactly as good as I would expect on original N64 hardware.
Now, on the control side of things... I am actually using a traditional original OEM Nintendo 64 "trident" controller for this gameplay session. I am really missing my wireless Retro Fighters Brawler64 right now, but unfortunately, I forgot to charge it up and the batteries were totally dead! So, we are going old school. Even with the original controller, the gameplay feels incredibly responsive. I am definitely liking what I am feeling regarding the complete lack of input lag from the scaler (even if my actual platforming skills led to me running right into those two goombas!).
The Verdict & Where to Buy
Overall, I think this is definitely a winning combination. The Voultar RGB mod, the HD Retrovision cables, and the PixelFX Morph 4K are working together very, very well. It looks fantastic, it sounds great, and most importantly, it is highly responsive with no major input latency issues that I can detect thus far.
But I want to hear from you! Let me know what you think of this 4K N64 footage down below in the comments. Does the jagginess bother you, or do you prefer the razor-sharp pixels?
