Nintendo has made some massive announcements recently regarding The Legend of Zelda franchise, from ongoing progress on the live-action movie to upcoming software releases. However, one major hardware reveal that Nintendo hasn't officially announced yet—but was just leaked online via outlets like Nintendo Everything—is the brand-new, limited-edition Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 console and matching Pro Controller 2! So let's take a look at this leak of the Legend of Zelda themed Switch 2 & Pro Controller 2 prior to the launch.
The leaked retail packaging photos circulating online look incredibly legit, featuring official product box shots that give us our first detailed look at this upcoming 40th Anniversary celebration hardware. The overall Zelda aesthetic is subtle, tasteful, and heavily inspired by classic Hyrule iconography. The limited-edition Switch 2 dock sports a sleek black and gold finish adorned with the iconic Triforce front and center. Meanwhile, the dark green and black Joy-Con 2 controllers feature intricate gold Triforce patterns on both sides, creating a striking contrast that retro and modern Zelda fans will immediately recognize.
In addition to the console bundle, the leaks reveal a standalone packaging design for the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller 2: The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition. The Pro Controller 2 carries the exact same aesthetic theme, boasting dark green grips, gold shoulder buttons and triggers, a deep black central faceplate, and a prominent golden Triforce and Royal Crest emblem displayed right in the middle. The leaked shots also give us a closer look at the back casing, the left analog stick, and the official 40th Anniversary branding logo in the corner, which includes a subtle NES-era Link icon!
Where there is smoke, there is usually fire, and these box leaks look as authentic as it gets. As arguably Nintendo’s second most iconic franchise alongside Mario, it has been interesting to see how Nintendo handles major milestones. While some fans were wondering how they would celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series, a specialized hardware drop like this is a massive statement.
For gamers who haven't made the jump to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware yet, could a special edition like this be the catalyst that finally pushes you to pick one up? When you factor in the console's continued commitment to physical media, full backward compatibility with your existing original Nintendo Switch library, and now a stunning Hyrule-themed aesthetic, it makes for a very compelling package.
Personally, while I think the design is clean and well-executed, it isn't something I will be purchasing myself. I already own a Switch 2, and given the premium cost of next-gen hardware today, buying a second unit just for a cosmetic upgrade isn't in the cards for me. That said, as far as aesthetic choices go, I actually wouldn't mind if Nintendo went even bolder with these designs! It would be amazing to see full character artwork featuring Link, Princess Zelda, or Ganondorf prominently integrated onto the dock or chassis to take it to the absolute next level. But for what it is, this subtle 40th-anniversary design is bound to make a lot of Zelda collectors very happy.
What are your thoughts on this leaked Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 and Pro Controller 2? Do you love the dark green, black, and gold Triforce aesthetic, or would you have preferred bolder character art? If you don't own a Switch 2 yet, is this 40th Anniversary edition enough to make you buy one? Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments!
