Mt Whitney is a 21.7 mile day hike with 6,600 feet of elevation gain to the highest summit in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet. The trail starts at Whitney Portal and climbs through forest, switchbacks, and alpine terrain to the summit. You need a permit from recreation.gov, and they go fast in the lottery. Start before dawn to avoid afternoon storms and give yourself time for the altitude. Bring layers, sun protection, plenty of water, and snacks. The final two miles above Trail Crest are exposed and can be dangerous in bad weather. If conditions aren't good, turn around. This is a long, hard day hike that requires fitness and preparation, but the summit views are worth it.
