The mechanism for a Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley (MPV) reduction reaction in which an aldehyde or ketone is converted to the corresponding alcohol. An Aluminum catalyst is used to accomplish this conversion. The same catalyst can be used in an Oppenauer oxidation in order to convert alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones.
