The mechanism for a Perkin reaction which is an organic reaction used to convert an aromatic aldehyde and anhydride into an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid. This reaction uses sodium acetate, sodium hydroxide as a base, and an acid work-up. The final product of the reaction can either be in the E or the Z configuration.
