The mechanism for a Wacker Oxidation reaction which follows a catalytic cycle. Using a Palladium catalyst, 1,2-disubstituted alkenes can be oxidized along with water as a co-oxidant in order to yield aldehydes or ketones as the final product. The final step of the reaction involves a reoxidation process in which the reduced Palladium is reoxidized by Cu(II) and atmospheric oxygen in order to regenerate the active palladium catalyst.
